1785 (25 Sept.) entire letter (affixed along left edge to piece of card) from Horatio Nelson to his uncle, William Suckling, in London, headlined "Boreas English Harbour", rated "1/-" and showing fair to fine "antigua" h.s. (Type PS10) with part Bishop mark on reverse; some restoration to small part internal page and top left corner of reverse. With transcript. Note: Nelson had been appointed to the "Boreas", a 28-gun frigate, on 18 March 1874 and had immediately sailed for the West Indies. He insisted on upholding the Navigation Acts, against the wishes of Sir Richard Hughes, and had incurred the wrath of the islanders when he seized four American ships for illegal trading. The masters of these ships were encouraged by the local population to sue Nelson for assault and imprisonment, and it is this case to which he refers in the present letter.
