1895 (2 Feb.) envelope from Robert Matier to his mother in Missouri bearing 1c. red tied by the triple-ring c.d.s. and U.S. Grant 5c. (defective) tied by "u.s. postal agency/shanghai" duplex (18.2), the reverse bearing further despatch, Shanghai Local Post, U.S.P.A. duplex, San Francisco (15.3) and Carthage arrival (19.3); some peripheral creasing and soiling. With the original letter which gives details of the Japanese taking of Wei Hai Wei and includes, " ...our only danger is in the Chinese Army being demoralized and irresponsible soldiers committing depredations".
