1847 (24 Jan.) entire letter "from Peter Morrison Private 667 1st. Batt. Royal Regt." at Ridge Barracks to Edinburgh, rated "1" with London Paid c.d.s. in red and showing, on reverse, a circle of stitch marks where the sender has, most, unusually, paid the 1d. rate by sewing a one penny coin to the letter, Antigua double-arc d.s. and two U.K. transit c.d.s., a further transit c.d.s. on face and accompanied by a 1d. coin of the period; a little soiled though a remarkable payment of the soldier's rate and the only recorded soldier's letter from Antigua.
