1859 (8 Feb.) envelope to a sailor on U.S. Frigate Powhatan in Hong Kong bearing U.S.A. 1857-61 5c. Jefferson in the rate brick red shade (Scott 27) tied by Washington c.d.s. with New York Br Pkt. transit c.d.s. (16.2) in reddish, rated "1/2" (8d. transatlantic plus 6d. British packet via Southampton), the reverse bearing London transit c.d.s. (26.2) in red partly overstruck by a good strike of the scarce type 12, open top c.d.s. (25.4) with code "C". Less than 40 type 12 covers have been recorded
